In addition to my Websites, I run a side business that sells science
fiction collectibles, mainly through Ebay. Having done some Ebay
selling myself, I can tell you for a fact that it IS possible to
make money on Ebay. But there are no big secrets on how to do it
- you just need to get your hands on some good, solid information
to get started. Tons of books have been written on this subject,
and there are also plenty of courses advertised over infomercials
(Dave Espino's Auctions for Income, etc.).
Selling products over Ebay is an attractive business to many people
because you do not have to build your own complicated e-commerce
site, and you can start part-time and grow your business as large
as you want.
If you are thinking of starting an Ebay selling business, here
are some things you should be aware of:
- If you sell a product that other people also sell, the price
competition will be fierce. You will not make big margins, so
in order to make a lot of money, you must deal with large quantities
of sales. To do this effectively, you need to streamline your
operation.
- Once your business grows, you will need to take advantage of
auction management software. Currently, the largest auction management
software is Marketworks.
- Since you are running a retail operation, make sure you get
the proper licenses (Business license, State Resellers Permit,
etc.) and charge sales tax to people buying from the same state
you are in. Talk to a tax accountant if you are not sure how these
things work.
- To get good prices for the products you sell, you usually need
to buy items in large quantities, and store them somewhere (a
garage or bedroom is where most people start).
- Customer service is crucial, since all your buyers can leave
feedback on each transaction, and this creates a "feedback
score" on which you will be judged by other potential consumers.
An Ebay business can be especially profitable if you sell rare
or unique items. High ticket items also do well. If you are serious
about Ebay selling, we strongly recommend you do some research first.
